Maxine was vaccinated for tick fever prior to arrival, however, her immune system had not created substantial antibodies when bitten.  After giving birth to Maxella she subsequently developed tick fever and lost over 100 kg.  The disease creates a high fever, anaemia, and possible death.  Constant treatment, attention, and special feeding by many people saw Maxine pull through.  Even when close to death she never neglected Maxella.  Two months on she has gained all the weight lost and has returned to the herd.
